Re: Thanks to madam: Dean Armstrong Q & A | ||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Hey JV -- I just got around to reading this. Thanks so much for posting it. Very interesting read, and kind of reflects my some of my feelings about the show. There are parts of Seasons 4 and 5 that I love, but other parts where the writing really suffered. I especially think Dean Armstrong is right about how much better it would have been if Ted and Blake's relationship had been allowed to develop over the course of the fifth season, rather than just tacking on the happy ending between them (especially instead of the whole plastic surgery story line and then Ted dating the stalker, etc). I loved the aspect of Ted's story in the fifth season that dealt with the fact that he was never going to be happy until he could learn to love himself, but this could still have been done without some of the stupid storylines he had.

Quote: Absolutely agree! And it was great to hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. (Tried to get Scott to comment in one of his Q& A's but no go there.) Also enjoyed Dean's "Teddy-toddy" refusal. |

Quote: Thank god! I thought his comment about Randy Harrison being able to rise above some of the dialogue he's been given really could apply to most of the actors on the show. Don't get me wrong -- there's some fabulous writing on the show. But there's definitely been some bad lines which have been made better by the ability of the cast. |

Very nice Peter Paige interview (with a great pic) in the June 6 Advocate (unfortunately not readable online), in which he discusses "Say Uncle" and answers the query, "Where are you going as an actor now?"
"I tested for a half-hour comedy this year that I didn't get, which I think was for the best because the character was starting to look more and more like 'Emmett.' Been there, done that for five years. I have no aversion to playing another gay role. But I need to confound people a bit more. Further adding: "Waiting to hear about a play right now. I was trained to do Shakespeare on Friday, Shaw on Saturday, Sunday afternoon a little Shepard, and then some Ibsen. But that kind of repertory doesn't really exist anymore in this country for the most part. Somebody's going to figure out how to do theater in LA." And: "My next movie that I'm going to be taking around to producers is a period epic--gay, 18th century, and it's big and sweeping and lush and heartbreaking...And it's going to cost money. But because of 'Brokeback,' I'm going to be able to say, 'We can make this work.' |

Thanks, Camcat, Peter is such an incredibly nice person, isn't he? That comes across in every articulate, warm, intelligent interview he's ever offered. I do hope he does well in life.

You're welcome, AG. And yes, Peter certainly does seem like a wonderful human being. In fact, I think he and Scott Lowell share a "niceness" gene; no surprise that they became such good friends.

Re: Brian scores! | ||||||||||||||||||||||

The AfterElton.com site recently ran a poll to select the 25 top TV gay characters....guess who was #1? Our Brian.
Justin, Emmett, Michael and Ben also made the list...I think Justin's character was #3. No other gay themed show had 5 winners. I may have to stop by Woody's and celebrate by drinking one Hot Buttered Brian!

And as an AfterElton follow-up there's now a cute video by Two Gay Guys discussing why Brian Kinney and Jack McFarland came in first and second in hotest gay tv characters. They indicated at the beginning of the video that they were surprised when Gale Harold came in so high in the 100 Hottest Men poll...and here he is, his QAF character came in first.

That's a cute article. Nice to see Robert being drooled over, lol. It's wonderful the way he's working on housing for the aging in the gay
community.
There's also a link there to a photo and brief article about Hal and his rocker-mode life now. In the comments, some poster fumes about his infamous "kissing a man is like kissing a dog" quote! Of course, that wasn't Hal, as we know, it was what'shisname Doctor Dave. (And I really have managed to forget his name. Cool.) Luckily, some one else corrected the poster so I didn't have to. |

Afraid it really WAS Hal with the dog comment. Chris Potter's comments were worse, of course. http://after-words.org/mr/archives/00000011.html

Oh, good heavens. Well, in full context, I almost see what he's trying to say, but couldn't he just have said "There's no emotional
context" and left it at that? The dog comparison is really stupid and insulting.
Right, Chris Potter, man with perpetual foot in mouth. One thing, there's no mystery why Hal and Potter's love scenes were so embarrassing to watch! Thanks for the correction, Flib. |

Avast there, Flibber! Great to see you bobbing up! And that post's a canny trick, what's the secret? Got a modern WORD, that can clip-out from a
website??
Speaking for myself I liked Hal, acting and all - with the appalling character of his sex-scenes left out of question - he was OK by me. (Indeed, starting my QaFUS via dialup, had it not been for his voiced-over intro persuading me there was some sophistication locked up in this huge download I'd really rather not have entertained, I'd never have kept going with it and you'd never have heard of me - it eventually took me 3 days of 24 hours and I was mush by the end.) But CP's remarks are in all likelihood based on the single experience of Hal as oppo. THAT'd have been no Welcome Mat! As for Hal, can't fathom him. On the face of his joining the troupe he was willing to lend himself to a projected Pro enterprise, while his in-the-can performance re the orientation question was so highly Con, you hafta wonder. I'd rather believe well of everyone, so I think his generous impulses got him to sign the contract and then he was trapped with an onus he couldn't deliver on, when it came to actually eating the pie. And I think he'd have preferred to deliver if he could. As for the motivation shaping the responses of them both, in the early days, it's obvious. They could easily have been committing career-suicide, so I can't blame them for putting up excessive verbal camouflage with their publicity-ops. If anything, with their fears so painfully on show it'd been brave to sign on, even demonstrative of a high level of acceptance. Added: philflam, can you see your IP address, in the poster-column at left? Hope not. More: BTW, I just glanced at the recaps for 508 and 510, and while jv's has NOT got its apostrophes, mine seems to have GROWN em back! I ask myself why, and recall I edited the post to make the links in it 'take'. Maybe that caused it.
